NDM1 (New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1) - ABG Response Statement To Recent Media Coverage
11th August 2010
In response to the recent media coverage of NDM1 (New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1):
Research indicates that this is not a new super bug at all. It is in fact an enzyme called beta-lactamase that is found in gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria such as:
- pseudomonas aeruginosa
- e.coli
- klebsiella pneumoniae
- Enterobacter
- C. freundii (Citrobacter)
This enzyme acts as a catalyst that increases the rate at which the bacteria colonises and
therefore the ability for the bacteria to create infection is higher.
The reason for the concern in the healthcare industry is that the antibiotic treatments
currently available today are not very effective at overcoming these enzymatic bacterial
infections.
The scientific world has been aware of this for sometime; for example in the UK there
have been 8 reported cases of this problem up to 2007; 21 cases in 2008; over 40 in 2009
and the rate of incidence is still rising. We have not found any current figures for 2010
reported UK cases as yet.
As eradic8® A2Z has undergone successful independent testing at Ready To Use (RTU)
levels against all of the above named bacteria we would have no hesitation in claiming
efficacy against this NDM-1 New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1 as it is known currently.
What we believe, is that this enzyme is actually emphasising the importance of using a
high level performance disinfectant cleaner such as eradic8® A2Z with proven efficacy.
