The Disinfectant For Total Swine Hygiene
With the fairly recent emergence of MRSA found in livestock and meat such as pigs, chickens and dairy cows in the Netherlands, Denmark and other European states major concerns are now being raised as to the very high possibilities that this might become wide spread in the UK.
The UK imports thousands of tons of fresh meat from Europe and there are claims that this new form found in raw meat could pose a greater threat than the hospital variant.
Dutch public health ministers have reported a .worrying development. that farm animal MRSA was found in 40 per cent of pigs as well as some dairy cows and 13 per cent of calves. The bug has also been found in food during a small number of tests carried out last year . in 20 per cent of raw pork samples, 3 per cent of raw beef and 21 per cent of raw chicken.
Whilst no cases have been reported in the UK as yet, very limited tests for its presence in livestock have been carried out up to now.
This situation means responsible preventative measures should be taken now. Good hygiene practice on and around the farm environment with highly proven disinfectant materials can surely help to reduce the risks associated with this new MRSA strain.
Dr Mark Enright of Imperial College, London said "My major concern would be if farmers were to contract this and pass it on to the general population"
